The only writers who are NOT receiving rejection letters on a regular basis are those writers who are not submitting queries, articles, stories, or book proposals on a regular basis. Rejection is just part of the business of writing.

DIY: How to Market Your Self-Published Book ⇢

writeworld:

by Alex Palmer

For a self-published author, marketing the book can be more important than writing it. With a few key steps, an author can build a loyal following, get the word out about his or her work, and get people to buy it.

  1. Build your web presence
  2. Build a Mailing List
  3. Target Your Messaging
  4. Keep Up the Maintenance

Great advice from Susan Orlean!

thetinhouse:

You have to simply love writing, and you have to remind yourself often that you love it.

You should read as much as possible. That’s the best way to learn how to write.

You have to appreciate the spiritual component of having an opportunity to do something as wondrous as writing. You should be practical and smart and you should have a good agent and you should work really, really hard. But you should also be filled with awe and gratitude about this amazing way to be in the world.

Don’t be ashamed to use the thesaurus. I could spend all day reading Roget’s! There’s nothing better when you’re in a hurry and you need the right word right now.

black muddy ankles

tdlauber:

we had the woods
cut by tracks
beyond
were trailers, doublewide
a border
forbidden to cross
they had the creek
spilling
to a pond
on the wrong side of the rails
we were crystal pools
with boards and slides
emerging spotless
from perfect dives
like our supposed lives
they had limbs and ropes
and a reedy pond
emerging with black muddy ankles
from daring leaps
the black muddy ankle kids
not our kind
we were told
but
turning 16
learning life
the hard way
that
none of us
are spot free
walking around
with black muddy insides
so
I crossed the tracks
went out on a limb
took a daring leap
emerging with black muddy ankles
feeling clean for maybe the first time

Quentin Coldwater.

Quentin wakes in his ivory tower
and huffs a labored sigh.
The steam that rises from his lips
births rainbows.
The sun settles viscous: syrup
on his wooden limbs,
but he is always cold, and immune to the joys
of sweetness−
so he surrenders.

Quentin holds a golden candlestick
and lets the wax drip over his fingers.
He is always cold,
but the burn feels nice on his
blackened skin.
He waits,
wary and thin,
for the snow to settle in.

There is a Wolf in My Bed

Only when the moon rises.
We rest on feather sheets until
they harden fossil-old.
Warm stare, cold air−
white teeth that shatter bone.
To touch their frozen tips with lips
turned black from lonely frostbite.

Escapism in motion:
in the static of  your heartbeat
in tension before escape
in eyes that reflect light
when paper covers
keep stars hidden.

I bury my head in your mouth and we
lay still for the dust to settle.

This is me.In light of my recent influx of new followers, I thought I might say hello. Hello. My name is Frankie. Though you may already know that.I’ve always been bad at first impressions, and by extension, writing any sort of introductory statement. We all know how strange it is to write about yourself. And initially I started this paragraph with where I was from and what age I was, but these are things I tell people every day and they don’t define me, not really.
What I will tell you is this. Currently I am spending half of my summer in Boston— the longest I have ever been away from my home in the Philippines. I have been in love twice, and am in the process of healing from the last heartache. Don’t worry, it isn’t as bad as it sounds. I have never been one to allow the world to harden my spirit.
I love books, I love people, and I love to write. I listen to a genre of music called “hip as fuck.” And I hope you will all bear with me as I attempt to share my work with the world.

xx Frankie.
